Romans 15: The Greek Text of Romans: A Text Critical Study
In the text that follows, the textual base is the edition of Westcott and Hort. The student is required to collate (compare) this text with the text of Nestle-Aland 27. To do this the student need merely compare, word for word, the text found following and the text printed in Nestle, noting all variations, no matter how small. I do not comment on every variant in what follows; only the more significant. But, again, the student is required to note every variant.
The pronoun "our" at the end of the first line should be "your". "Your" is much better and more widely attested, and is in concord with the context.
TR adds "brothers" after "you". There is no reason for this addition and it is simply a clarification and explanation and therefore is clearly secondary.
Some manuscripts add "God" after "spirit". This is a clarifying gloss.
"To come to you" after "Spain" is a scribal addition found in some manuscripts. The absence of the phrase in many early and reliable texts demonstrates its secondary nature.
"Of the Gospel" is a secondary addition found in some Byzantine manuscripts. The generally poor quality of Byzantine readings leads us to describe this as a secondary textual addition.
The unusual structure here is smoothed by some scribes. Such smoothing is generally a sign of correction.
